International Contingent Visits Smyrna Public Library


A contingent of international visitors who are attending a summer program at Georgia State University visited and toured the Smyrna Public Library on Wednesday, July 19. The group also visited City Hall and the Community Center and heard presentations from several department heads about Smyrna's form of government.  Thank you for visiting.

Summer Reading Program Finale

Thank you to everyone who came out for the Summer Reading Program finale today and helped "Build a Better Mouse Trap" with Magic Man Bill Packard.

Visiting Researchers Review Extensive Genealogy Collection at Smyrna Public Library


The Smyrna Public Library had a visit from a group of genealogy researchers from Gwinnett County this morning.  After a brief tour, the group stayed for hours making use of all our resources. Thank you for visiting!

The Smyrna Public Library has an extensive collection of genealogy resources located on the second floor in the round Genealogy Room.

Summer Reading Program: Cardboard Build-Off Challenge

Tonight during our cardboard build-off challenge, our tweens couldn't wait to get started! Our judge had to guess what they'd made, and she guessed correctly: a snowman melting, a robot, and a monster TV, and more!

Summer Reading Program: Georgia State University Bio-Bus Visit

The Georgia State University Bio-Bus Team visited the Smyrna Public Library today.  They presented "DNA is for Families" in a two 90-minute education workshops in the moring and afternoon.  The workshops were geared for both adults and kids (age 5 and up).

Mr. Garland will provide an overview of Smyrna's outdoor amenities, highlighting hidden gems and discussing improvement plans currently underway.

Speaker Biography:

Richard Garland joined the City of Smyrna in late 2016. He previously served as executive director of the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority and has 25 years experience working in recreation.

Japanese Rice Paper Collage and Raku by Sheila Giddens Opens at Smyrna Public Library Display Gallery

The July/August 2017 Display Gallery exhibit has opened – Japanese Rice Paper Collage and Raku by Sheila Giddens.  Ms. Giddens’s exhibit concludes on August 31. The Display Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the Smyrna Library. The Display Gallery exhibits are sponsored by the Friends of Smyrna Library.

Artist Statement:

Sheila Giddens began her art in ernest by studying the Yamazaki Technique of Japanese Rice Paper Collage under Mr. Yamazaki's daughter, Ruriko, during the early 1980's. She moved to Atlanta in 1989, continuing to perfect her rice paper collages. In 1992, she expanded upon this form with another Japanese technique of art for making hand built pottery and jewelry. This form of art is known as "Raku". She studied the Raku art form with Karen Beswick and later clay sculpture with Peg Schmid and Kelly Thames. She has since extended her art work into colored pencils, studying under Joe belt, Vera Curnow, Meredith Rambo and Janie Gildow. Most of her art involves some form of wildlife which was introduced early in her life by her father.


Sheila has been a member of the South Cobb Arts Alliance since 1989 and an active board member since 1990. She has held several offices in the South Cobb Arts Alliance, including president from 1994 to 1996. She also recently had the honor of being selected as their 1999 "Volunteer of the Year".
