Pop-Up Winter Book Sale Very Successful

THANK YOU, Smyrna-area Shoppers & Friends of Smyrna Library Volunteers! Today's "pop-up" book sale was a huge success. We raised over $1,700 in 6 hours to support new youth book purchases. WOW!

Today's sale was very quickly organized over the past couple of weeks. (We unexpectedly ran out of book storage space.) It could not have been so successful without the 50+ volunteers who found time, with very short notce, to help this week. Thank you, thank you, and thanks again!

We also want to thank the Bright Side Cobb Newspapers for promoting today's book sale in the February Newspaper and the City of Smyrna for online social media sharing.  We sincerely appriciate your support.

Thank You, Volunteers!

We are very lucky to have incredible volunteers.  Tonite our volunteer team examined, sorted, boxed, and shelved almost 2000 donated books for the big sale on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.  This is really incredible because this weekend’s sale had to be quickly organized due to all of the generous book donations that we have received. We are out of out of storage space.

Here is photo of just a part of what our great volunteer team can did in a couple of hours.

Adult Craft Workshop: Chinese Calligraphy

Today we celebrated Chinese New Year with an introduction to Chinese Calligraphy.

Chinese calligraphy is the art of writing Chinese characters, blending visual aesthetics with literary interpretation.

Regarded as one of the four esteemed pursuits among ancient Chinese literati, alongside playing stringed instruments, the board game "Go", and painting, calligraphy exemplifies a profound cultural tradition where the stroke of a brush carries both artistic expression and philosophical depth.

Ms. Loyee Ling led the workshop.  She is a certified Chinese teacher and an advocate of cultural education.  All workshop supplies were provided and a paper sculpture craft was also included.

This workshop was sponsored by The Friends of Smyrna Library.

Sunday Lecture: The Life & Career of Nellie Mae Rowe, Folk Artist

Our Sunday Lecture today was on the life & career of local folk artist, Nellie Mae Rowe.  It was presented by Dr. William Marchione after refreshments were served.  Thank you, Mr. Marchione for the very informative discussion and all of the attendees.

Lecture Synopsis:

A creative and resourceful self-taught African-American folk artist, Nellie Mae Rowe gained national recognition during the last decade of her life (1900-1982). Long before that, she was well known locally by visitors who came to her exuberantly embellished home on Pace’s Ferry Road, containing her colorful drawings, paintings, stuffed dolls, and recycled objects. Mrs. Rowe’s works are today on display at the High Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, and several other notable public and private collections across the nation.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. William Marchione, author of A Brief History of Smyrna (2013) and former Associate Professor at the Art Institute of Boston.

The Sunday Lecture series is sponsored by the Friends of Smyrna Library.

Temporary Changes to Friends of Smyrna Library Bookstore

The Friends of Smyrna Library Bookstore has had a much smaller footprint since late December.  Our three bookshelves that served us for years reached their end of life and had to be removed.  We have ordered new shelving and the units will arrive in March.

The FOSL Bookstore is important to our fundraising so we are being creative in the interim.  We still have the magazine rack and we are temporarily using a blue cart that holds almost 300 books.  All of the books on the cart are only 75 cents.  Cash, PayPal, and Venmo are accepted for payment.

We'll annnounce here and on social media when the new shelving units are installed.
