6-week Lecture Series

February 3 - March 9, 2020

Instructor: Dr. William P. Marchione, Ph.D.

Each lecture will address two broad themes, with a half hour devoted to each. The series will begin on Monday February 3, 2020 and conclude six weeks later on March 9, 2020. The class will meet in the first floor meeting room of the Smyrna Public Library from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

1. Native Society: Assimilation & Expulsion, 1825-1837; Transportation Challenges and Economic Opportunities, 1837-1851. (Monday, February 3, 2020)

2. The Antebellum Economy, 1851-60; The Impact and Legacy of the Civil War, 1861-1880. (Monday, February 10, 2020)

3. Agricultural Diversification, 1880-1905; The Suburbanizing Impulse, 1905-1930. (Monday, February 17, 2020)

4. The Nadir of Race Relations, 1918-38; The Impact of the Depression Era and the New Deal, 1930 to 1942. (Monday, February 24, 2020)

5. The Economic Stimulus of the World War II and Cold War Economies, 1943-70; An Era of Fevered Development, 1970-1985. (Monday, March 2, 2020)

6. The Transformative Years, Smyrna since 1985; Looking Backward and Forward (Monday, March 9, 2020)

Reading material:

Marchione, A Brief History of Smyrna, Georgia (History Press, 2013). The library owns eight circulating copies of this history. Copies are also be available for purchase at the Library’s circulation desk and from on-line booksellers like Amazon. Also, a kindle version of the book can be ordered online.

Recommendations will be made from time to time of books and other material housed in the Smyrna Public Library’s Local History Collection.

Pen & Ink by Fred Krenson Opens in Smyrna Public Library Art Gallery

The January/February 2020 Art Gallery exhibit has opened – Pen & Ink by Fred Krenson.  Mr. Krenson’s exhibit is on display through February 28. The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the Smyrna Public Library.

Art Gallery exhibits are organized by the Friends of Smyrna Library.

Artist Statement

Fred is registered architect with 40 years of experience focused on the design of sports facilities, Fred’s designs of collegiate sports venues set the standard for creating home court advantage. Arenas at the University of South Carolina, Arkansas and Texas Tech are just a few examples. Fred is a Senior Vice President and Board member at Rosser. When he’s not working with clients to create innovative venues, Fred is traveling and filling his sketchbooks with beautiful drawings of cathedrals, churches and courthouses from around the world.

FOSL Donates Funds to Expand Youth Nonfiction Collection

We are please to announce that the youth nonfiction books funded by a recent Friends of Smyrna Library donation are ready to be checked out!

Books & Bricks LEGO Show and Fundraiser Concludes

Thank you, Dixie LEGO Users Group for the awesome show and fundraiser this weekend.  Books & Bricks LEGO Show and Fundraiser was a big success.  The trains, detailed buildings, winter scenes and more were really well done and everyone, of all ages, was impressed.

We look forward to partnering with you again in the future.

75-Cent Bargain Book Sale Begins Today in Friends of Smyrna Library Book Store

We put out 250 books in our FOSL Book Store for only 75 cents each! Look for the eclectic collection of books with green dots on the lower shelves.

The Friends of Smyrna Library Bookstore is located behind the left staircase when entering the lobby from the parking lot. Shop the bookstore for hundreds of incredible bargains on hardbacks, paperbacks, magazines & more. 

Our First In-Library Fall Book Sale was a Big Success!

We raised almost $1,400 at last weekend's first-ever indoor Friends of Smyrna Library Fall Book Sale. We sincerely appreciate all of the support from our shoppers and volunteers.

Moving forward our large Spring & Fall Book Sales will be held in the Smyrna Public Library Meeting Room.

THANK YOU, Kate, Rosie & June, for volunteering for almost 2 hours this evening to finish getting the books organized and priced for this weekend’s book sale. They made themselves available with short notice and again did an awesome job! They joined our teen volunteer program this summer and have been wonderful volunteers and great workers.

Our board member, who is recuperating from a fractured arm, was especially thankful since all he could do was organize the work to done and smile. Thanks to the other FOSL board members and library team members who helped throughout the day.
